Introduction
API 5CT is a commonly used oil well pipeline technical standard in the oil and gas industry, which provides strict specifications for the production, inspection and application of casing and tubing. As one of the important grades, API 5CT L80 casing pipe enjoys a high reputation in the industry for its excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. This article will comprehensively analyze the characteristics, specifications, production process and application areas of API 5CT L80 casing pipe to provide users with a clear and detailed reference.
Characteristics of API 5CT L80 casing pipe
Classification and product level
API 5CT L80 casing pipe is divided into three product specification levels (PSL-1, PSL-2 and PSL-3) to meet different usage requirements. Its steel is further divided into three types according to performance requirements: L80-1, L80 9Cr and L80 13Cr. The materials and properties of each type are slightly different, but all are improved by heat treatment to improve corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
Corrosion resistance
API 5CT L80 casing and tubing is designed to resist carbon dioxide (CO₂) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) corrosion, and is particularly suitable for oil and gas wells containing hydrogen sulfide. In harsh environments, its excellent corrosion resistance significantly extends service life and reduces the risk of pipeline cracking.
Heat treatment process
L80-1: Full-length quenching and tempering (Q).
L80 9Cr and L80 13Cr: Usually air quenching process is adopted. L80 13Cr may become brittle when tempered below 620°C (1150°F), so special attention should be paid to temperature control.
Mechanical properties
Yield strength: 552 MPa to 655 MPa.
Tensile strength: minimum 655 MPa.
The mechanical strength of L80 is higher than that of J55 and K55, similar to that of N80, and is a representative of medium strength grades.

Heat treatment process
L80 casing pipe requires heat treatment to ensure material properties. L80 9Cr and L80 13Cr show excellent toughness and corrosion resistance after quenching and tempering.
API 5CT L80 casing and tubing main application
Oil and gas industry
API 5CT L80 casing is widely used in drilling and production operations. Its material is particularly suitable for oil and gas wells containing sulfur gas, and can effectively deal with the corrosion problem of hydrogen sulfide on pipelines.
Deep wells and complex well conditions
L80
casing pipe is an ideal choice for deep wells or oil wells with complex geological conditions that require high tensile strength and corrosion resistance.
Environmental protection and cost control
By selecting high-performance pipes of L80 grade, the service life can be significantly extended and the maintenance frequency can be reduced, thereby effectively reducing operating costs.
