Mechanical strength of API 5L X60 pipes

The performance of the API 5L X60 L415 is excellent. API 5L X60 L415 has a minimum tensile strength of 75,400 Psi 520 MPa and a minimum yield strength of 60,200 Psi 415 MPa. It can withstand the intense pressure found in oil and gas pipeline systems. The strength values of seamless steel line pipe and welded steel line pipe (including ERW, LSAW, SSAW) are the same. On the other hand, there is no difference in minimum intensity values between X60 PSL 1 and PSL 2, but PSL2 limits the maximum intensity value. According to API 5L 46th Edition 2018.

Chemical composition of API 5L X60 pipes

The chemical composition of API 5L X60 L415 pipe is similar to other grades of API 5L pipe. For PSL-1 pipes, the carbon content (C) must not exceed 0.26%, and the sulfur (S) and phosphorus (P) contents are relatively low to ensure high corrosion resistance of the pipe. For the PSL-2 grade, the carbon content is lower, up to 0.12%, to increase toughness and corrosion resistance and ensure the pipe can handle corrosion in sour environments.

In PSL-1, the maximum composition limits include: C ≤ 0.26%, Si ≤ 0.45%, Mn ≤ 1.4%, P ≤ 0.030%, S ≤ 0.030%, Cu ≤ 0.50%, Ni ≤ 0.50%, Cr ≤ 0.50 %, Mo ≤ 0.15%, and the sum of Nb, V, Ti should be ≤ 0.06%. For PSL-2, the carbon content must not exceed 0.12%, the manganese content is kept below 1.4, the phosphorus content is 0.025%, the sulfur content is 0.015%, and the carbon equivalent (CEq) is strictly controlled to improve corrosion resistance.
