Material Composition and Corrosion Resistance

API 5L X42 pipes are characterized by their low carbon content, contributing to their excellent weldability and mechanical performance. The alloy composition typically includes manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur, which collectively enhance the pipe's mechanical strength and durability.
One of the standout features of API 5L X42 ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) pipes is their exceptional resistance to high-pressure conditions, extreme temperatures, and corrosive environments. API 5L X42 Pipe: Strength Grades and Applications Overview

API 5L pipes are divided into multiple grades based on strength performance. The grade begins with "X" and is followed by a number, which represents the yield strength value (in PSI). For example, API 5L X42 PSL 2 pipe indicates a yield strength of approximately 42,000 PSI. This classification helps users select the appropriate piping material based on project requirements.

API 5L X42 pipe has slightly higher manganese content compared to Grade A and Grade B. The increase in manganese content gives the X42 pipe greater strength and hardness, giving it significant advantages in withstanding higher pressures and harsh environments. In addition, the control of carbon content in ISO 3183 L290 pipe is a highlight of its chemical properties. Although the carbon content of X42 grade is similar to that of B grade, it has a significantly higher carbon content than A grade, providing stronger mechanical properties.



Differences between PSL 1 and PSL 2

The production and specification of API 5L X42 pipes are based on the product standards developed by the API Technical Committee and are divided into two levels: PSL 1 and PSL 2:

PSL 1 (Product Specification Level 1)

PSL 1 is the basic standard level, intended for general use and suitable for non-critical projects. Its chemical composition and testing requirements are relatively loose, its production cost is low, and it is suitable for general transportation needs.

PSL 2 (Product Specification Level 2)

PSL 2 has stricter requirements on chemical composition control, test methods and quality inspection, including:
The content of chemical elements (such as sulfur, phosphorus and other impurity elements) is strictly limited.
The Charpy impact test must be passed to ensure low temperature toughness.
Traceability management is mandatory to ensure the integrity of quality records even after testing is completed.
Therefore, PSL 2 pipes are generally of higher quality and more reliable performance, and are suitable for application scenarios with higher requirements on safety and service life.

Manufacturing process: seamless and ERW pipe selection

API 5L X42 pipes can be produced by either seamless or electric resistance welding (ERW).
Seamless pipe: Usually used in high pressure or high temperature environments, it has higher strength and pressure resistance due to its weld-free design.

ERW pipe: produced by resistance welding process, suitable for medium and low pressure transportation, with high production efficiency and low cost.

Seamless: Includes hot rolled seamless and cold drawn seamless, diameters up to 24 inch normally.
ERW: Electric Resistance Welded, OD up to 24 inch.
DSAW/SAW: Double Sub-merged Arck Welding, substitute welding methods than ERW for larger diameter welded pipes.
LSAW: Longitudinal Sub-merged Arc Welding, also called JCOE pipe, OD up to 56 inch. JCOE is named by manufacturing processes with J Shape, C shape, O shape and cold expanding process to release the pipe strength during transformations.
SSAW / HSAW: Spiral Sub-merged Arc Welding, or Helical SAW, diameters up to 100 inch

API 5L Pipe Quality Inspection Standards:


Hydrostatic Test
The pipe shall be subjected to a hydrostatic test with no leakage in the weld or pipe body. If the pipe section used has successfully passed the test, the joint does not need to be hydrostatically tested.

Bend Test
No cracks shall be present in any part of the test piece and no openings shall be present in the weld.

Flattening Test
The acceptance criteria for the flattening test shall be:

EW Pipe D<12.750 inches:

X60, T 500 inches. The weld shall not open until the distance between the plates is less than 66% of the original outside diameter. For all grades and wall thicknesses, it is 50%.
For pipes with D/t > 10, the weld shall not open until the distance between the plates is less than 30% of the original outside diameter.

CVN Impact Test for PSL2

Many PSL2 pipe sizes and grades require CVN. Seamless pipe will be tested inside the pipe body. Welded pipe is tested on the pipe body, pipe welds, and heat affected zone. Refer to the full API 5L specification for sizes and grades and a chart of required absorbed energy values.
