What is ASTM A192 Seamless Steel Pipe?
ASTM A192 is the same as ASME SA-192, which is a standard specification covering the minimum wall thickness seamless carbon steel boiler and superheater tubes for high-pressure service. ASTM SA192 seamless steel pipe is a standard for seamless carbon steel pipes for high-pressure boilers jointly developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), representing an internationally recognized material specification in this field. This type of steel pipe is specially designed for high temperature and high pressure environments and plays a vital role in power station boilers and petrochemical equipment. Compared with ordinary seamless steel pipes, SA192 steel pipes have more stringent requirements in material selection, production process and quality control to ensure its long-term reliable performance under harsh working conditions.
ASTM A192 / ASME SA192 Tubes sizes and thicknesses usually furnished to this specification are 1⁄2 in. to 7 in. [12.7 to 177.8 mm] outside diameter and 0.085 to 1.000 in. [2.2 to 25.4 mm], inclusive, in minimum wall thickness. Tubing having other dimensions may be furnished, provided such tubes comply with all other requirements of this specification.
ASTM A192 / ASME SA192 Tubes mechanical property requirements do not apply to tubing smaller than 1⁄8 in. [3.2 mm] inside diameter or 0.015 in. [0.4 mm] thickness.
Standard system: The standard system corresponding to ASTM SA192 seamless steel pipe mainly includes ASTM A192/A192M and ASME SA-192/SA-192M. The two have the same content, but the issuing agencies are different. ASME SA192 is an ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) approved material and can be directly used in ASME certified equipment without additional material review, which reflects its importance in high-pressure equipment.
Application scope: SA192 steel pipe is suitable for high-pressure boiler systems with working pressure ≤9.8Mpa and temperature 450℃-650℃. It is mainly used in heating surface pipes, economizers, superheaters, reheaters and other parts. It performs well in thin-walled high-pressure applications and is a typical carbon steel pipe for high-pressure boilers.
International recognition: SA192 steel pipe is widely used in the international market. The equivalent standard in China is 20G steel in GB5310, but exported products still need to fully comply with ASTM standards. In many international power plant projects, especially those designed with American standards, SA192 is the designated material.
Quality requirements: SA192 standard has strict regulations on chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensional accuracy, heat treatment and non-destructive testing. Testing includes water pressure testing, eddy current testing, ultrasonic testing, etc. to ensure that the product is safe and reliable under high temperature and high pressure.
