ASTM A333 Gr6 Low-temperature seamless steel pipe specifications

Date:2025-08-07Tags:seamless steel pipe , SA333 standard
ASTM A333 Gr6 seamless steel pipe is specially designed for use in cryogenic environments. It maintains excellent mechanical and physical properties in low-temperature environments (e.g., -40°C to -196°C, or even lower), ensuring safe and reliable use in cryogenic engineering.

Cryogenic carbon steel pipe is characterized by its ability to maintain sufficient strength, ductility, and toughness in cryogenic environments (e.g., -40°C to -196°C, or even lower).

A333Gr.6 Low-Temperature Seamless Steel Pipe Standard

A333Gr.6 belongs to the US ANSI and ASTM-SA333 low-temperature steel standards and is used under conditions with a minimum impact temperature of -46°C. Its operating temperature range and fracture toughness are similar to those of domestic 16Mn steel (the minimum operating temperature of 16Mn steel is -40°C).
The ASME SA333 standard (seamless and welded nominal steel pipe for low-temperature use) specifies A333-6 as a US designation, which is also used in many countries.
A333.Gr6 chemical composition: C ≤ 0.30%, Mn 0.29-1.06%, P ≤ 0.025%, S ≤ 0.025%, Si ≥ 0.10%.

The SA333 standard specifies a minimum impact test temperature of -45°C for A333.Gr.6, and this value is also used when determining the minimum temperature resistance when selecting.

Regarding its impact on low-temperature impact toughness, phosphorus (P) is the element with the greatest impact on the Charpy toughness of ASTM A333 Gr.6 seamless steel pipe among C, Si, P, Si, and N. Its content should be reduced. The addition of manganese, along with small amounts of nickel, vanadium, copper, and niobium, can significantly lower the critical brittle-ductile transition temperature, refine grains, and thus improve impact toughness.

Low-Temperature Steel Pipe Dimensions

Applications of ASTM A333 Gr6 Carbon Steel Pipe

Petrochemical Industry
In the petrochemical industry, LPG needs to be stored and transported at low temperatures to maintain its liquid state. ASTM A333 Gr6 seamless steel pipe is used for LPG transportation pipelines, connecting pipes to storage tanks, and other applications.

Air Separation Unit
In an air separation unit, air must be cooled to extremely low temperatures (for example, the boiling point of liquid nitrogen is approximately -196°C) to separate gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, and argon. Cryogenic steel pipe is used in refrigeration circulation piping within the air separation unit and connecting pipes to gas separation towers.

Cryogenic Refrigeration Systems
Some specialized industrial processes, such as the preparation of superconducting materials, require extremely low temperatures (near zero degrees Celsius). Cryogenic steel pipe is used in the piping systems of these cryogenic refrigeration equipment, ensuring sealing and stability at extremely low temperatures, providing a stable low-temperature environment for the preparation of superconducting materials.

Aerospace
Liquid hydrogen (boiling point approximately -253°C) and liquid oxygen (boiling point approximately -183°C) are commonly used rocket propellants in space launches. ASTM A333 Gr6 seamless steel pipe is used in rocket engine components such as liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen storage tanks and delivery pipelines.
